About the role
Every digital substation and every remotely controlled switch depends on a communications network that stays up during faults and storms. This role designs and delivers those networks for regional grid operators. You plan IP/MPLS and carrier Ethernet backbones, define segmentation between operational and corporate traffic, and support migration from legacy SDH. You work with substation automation engineers, OT security consultants and the client's network operations centre.
What you will do
- Design IP/MPLS and carrier Ethernet topologies for operational telecom networks
- Prepare low-level designs, configuration templates and migration plans away from SDH/PDH
- Implement segmentation, QoS and redundancy for teleprotection and SCADA traffic
- Support tendering and evaluation of network equipment suppliers
- Run acceptance tests and hand over documented networks to client operations
What you bring
- 3+ years in network engineering for service providers, utilities or transport operators
- Practical skills in routing and switching: OSPF, IS-IS, BGP, MPLS, VLANs
- Experience with equipment from vendors such as Nokia, Cisco, Juniper or Hirschmann
- Understanding of availability and latency requirements for operational traffic
- CCNP, JNCIP or a comparable certification, or equivalent experience
Good to have
- Knowledge of IEC 61850-90-12 for wide-area networks
- Experience with network automation in Ansible or Python
